1.5 HP and 1.25 HP Air Conditioners: What Suits Your Room
A 1.25 HP air conditioner (about 12,000 BTU) suits a room of about 14–18 m² (150–195 sq ft), and a 1.5 HP air conditioner (about 13,500 BTU) a room of about 17–21 m² (183–226 sq ft), depending on the floor and sun exposure. (Israeli stores size ACs in “horsepower”, koach sus, where 1 HP ≈ 9,000 BTU/h.) In Israeli stores, most models in this size actually deliver about 11,000–12,400 BTU and are labeled 1.25 HP. Models labeled exactly 1.5 HP are rare, so choose by the BTU on the spec sheet, not the label.
On this page you’ll find which room each size suits, which Tadiran, Electra and Tornado models are on sale now and at what prices, and when to jump straight to 2 HP. We didn’t test the ACs ourselves: the data is based on spec sheets and prices published at Israeli stores in November 2026.
The short answer

Electra Relax INV 170
1.25 HP, 12,355 BTU cooling, 10,966 BTU heating, SEER 6.27, SCOP 5.07, Shabbat mode, WiFi
Why: The highest BTU we saw among 1.25 HP models, at one of the lowest prices in the category, with Shabbat mode and WiFi per the store page.
Watch out: One-year warranty per the store page, and heating is lower than cooling. No noise figures.
Electra A Inverter 140
1.25 HP, 11,020 BTU cooling, A++ cooling, Shabbat mode
Why: Per the store page, an inverter with Shabbat mode and a 5-year warranty badge for about ₪1,260, lower than most 1.25 HP models.
Watch out: 11,020 BTU is the low end of 1.25 HP. No SEER or noise figures on the product page, so ask for the full spec sheet.
Tadiran Air One INV 180
1.25 HP, 12,180 BTU cooling and heating, SEER 7, SCOP 3.9, Shabbat mode, WiFi, 10C breaker
Why: SEER 7, the highest we saw in the category among Tadiran models, with identical cooling and heating output, Shabbat mode and a 5-year warranty badge.
Watch out: SCOP of only 3.9, so it’s less efficient at heating than the Platinum 180. No noise figures on the page.
Tornado TOP J INV 16 X WIFI EU
11,942 BTU cooling (range 2,730–13,989), 12,966 BTU heating, SEER 6.4, SCOP 4.1, A++, Shabbat mode, WiFi
Why: Per the store page, a full 7-year importer warranty subject to activation within 30 days, with an inverter range reaching about 14,000 BTU at peak.
Watch out: Slightly more expensive than the equivalent Electra models, and no noise figure on the page.
Electra Platinum INV 180
1.25 HP, 12,300 BTU cooling (range 3,700–13,500), 13,100 BTU heating, SEER 6.6, SCOP 5.2, R32, 40 dB indoor
Why: SCOP of 5.2 and an upper range of 13,500 BTU, i.e. 1.5 HP at peak heat. It’s one of the only models in the category with published indoor and outdoor noise figures.
Watch out: Shabbat mode isn’t mentioned on the page, and the displayed warranty is one year. The outdoor unit reaches 56 dB.
Prices in Israel: Air conditioners

Anyone who heats a lot in winter or wants a published noise figure; high SCOP and R32 refrigerant.
Price ranges seen in Israeli shops and price-comparison sites in November 2026, VAT included, usually without installation.
What to look at before buying
| What to check | What it is | Our recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| Actual BTU | Models labeled 1.25 HP deliver between about 11,000 and about 12,400 BTU. The difference is worth about 2 m² of coverage. | For a 16–18 m² room choose 12,000 BTU or more. For a 14 m² room, about 11,000 BTU is enough. |
| Inverter range | An inverter AC can run above its nominal capacity at peak heat. Some manufacturers publish the range. | If you’re on the border between 1.25 and 1.5 HP, prefer a model whose upper range reaches 13,500 BTU or more, like the Electra Platinum INV 180. |
| Heating | On 1.25 HP models, heating can be higher or lower than cooling by several thousand BTU. | If this is the room you heat in winter, compare the heating figure and SCOP. 4.5 and above is considered good. |
| SEER efficiency | The cooling efficiency measure over the summer. | On the models we checked, SEER ranged from 6.3 to 7. In a master bedroom where the AC runs every night, prefer 6.6 or higher. |
| Noise | Most stores don’t publish a noise figure. The Electra Platinum INV 180 lists 40 dB for the indoor unit at high speed. | In a bedroom, ask for the noise figure at low speed, and use sleep mode. |
| Warranty and registration | On the models we checked we saw warranties from one to 7 years, sometimes only if you activate them within 30–60 days. | Register the warranty right after installation. Per Tadiran, you only get the extra years if you register them within 60 days. |
Which room suits a 1.25 HP AC and which a 1.5 HP?
1.25 HP suits a room of about 15–18 m² on a mid-level floor, and 1.5 HP a room of about 18–21 m². On a top floor with sun exposure, the ranges shrink by about 20%.
The calculation is based on about 650 BTU per m², the basis of the calculator on our site:
- 1.25 HP (about 12,000 BTU): about 18.5 m² on a mid-level floor, about 16 m² on a top floor and about 15 m² on a top floor with a west-facing window.
- 1.5 HP (about 13,500 BTU): about 21 m² on a mid-level floor, about 18 m² on a top floor and about 16.5 m² on a sunny top floor.
- Ceiling above 2.8 m or a room open to a hallway: add about 10% more.
This size suits a master bedroom, a large study, a small living room in a 2–3 room apartment (Israelis count the living room as a room), or a top-floor bedroom where a 1 HP AC isn’t enough. For a living room of 20 m² or more, and certainly one open to the kitchen, a 2 HP AC is better.
The full table, from 1 to 5 HP, is in our guide on how many horsepower an AC needs, which also has a calculator.
Why is it hard to find an AC of exactly 1.5 HP?
Because most manufacturers in Israel jump from a model of about 12,000–12,400 BTU, labeled 1.25 HP, to a model of about 15,000–18,000 BTU, labeled 1.5–2 HP. So if you’re looking for 13,500 BTU, you have to decide which way to round.
Examples from the spec sheets we checked:
- Tadiran Air One INV 180: labeled 1.25 HP, 12,180 BTU.
- Electra Platinum INV 180: labeled 1.25 HP, 12,300 BTU, but the inverter range reaches 13,500 BTU.
- Tornado TOP J INV 18: 15,013 BTU cooling, at about ₪2,590.
- Electra Relax Inverter 240: labeled 2 HP, 16,241 BTU.
On top of that, the number in the model name doesn’t always indicate capacity. At Electra, model 140 of the A Inverter series is 1.25 HP (11,020 BTU), and model 150 of the Platinum series is 1 HP (9,600 BTU). Even at the same store, the table and the spec sheet sometimes show different figures, so it’s important to read the cooling output line in BTU/h.
The rule: if your calculation comes out at 12,500 BTU or less, a 1.25 HP model with a wide upper range will be enough. If it comes out at 14,000 BTU or more, skip to a model of about 15,000–18,000 BTU.
Tadiran 1.25 HP ACs: which models exist and how they differ
Tadiran has several 1.25 HP models at about ₪1,500–2,000. The main difference between them is efficiency and warranty, not capacity.
What we saw on the store pages:
- Tadiran Air One INV 180: 12,180 BTU, SEER 7, SCOP 3.9, Shabbat mode, WiFi and a 5-year warranty badge. Sells for about ₪1,650.
- Tadiran Galaxy INV-185: 11,430 BTU, SEER 6.12, SCOP 4.02 and WiFi. Per the page, the warranty is one year from the importer, and Shabbat mode isn’t mentioned. Sells for about ₪1,990, and the black version for about ₪1,565.
- The store’s list also includes the Alpha Pro INV 185X, at about ₪1,990, and the Supreme 180 INV, at about ₪2,170. We didn’t check their specs.
Bottom line: among the Tadiran models we checked, the Air One INV 180 gives the highest SEER at the lowest price. If you heat a lot in winter, also compare it with the Electra Platinum INV 180, which per the specs reaches a SCOP of 5.2. A full comparison between the two importers’ series is in our Tadiran vs Electra air conditioner guide.
1.25 HP or 2 HP for an 18–22 m² room?
For an 18–20 m² room on a mid-level floor, 1.25 HP with a wide upper range is enough. On a top floor, and from 21 m² up, about 15,000–18,000 BTU is better.
Considerations based on what we saw in stores:
- Price: a 1.25 HP model costs about ₪1,250–2,050, and a 2 HP model about ₪2,230–3,400. The difference is about ₪1,000, plus about ₪400 in installation, because per pro.co.il (an Israeli contractors’ site) installing 2–4 HP costs about ₪1,200–1,800 compared with ₪800–1,400 up to 1.5 HP.
- Electrical: the 1.25 HP models we checked work with a 10-amp breaker. The Tadiran Air One INV 240, a 2 HP model, requires a 16-amp breaker per the specs. In an older home, check this with an electrician.
- Humidity: an oversized AC in a medium room reaches temperature quickly and removes less humidity. On the coast this feels like cold, sticky air.
If you’re right on the border, for example a 19 m² room on a top floor, consider the Tornado TOP J INV 18 (15,013 BTU) as a compromise between the two sizes.
How much does a 1.25–1.5 HP AC cost including installation?
Usually about ₪2,050–3,450: about ₪1,250–2,050 for the AC plus about ₪800–1,400 for standard installation.
Per pro.co.il, standard installation of an AC up to 1.5 HP includes up to 3 meters (10 ft) of copper piping. Each extra meter costs about ₪120–140. Other common costs:
- Drilling through a concrete wall: about ₪300–400. In a mamad (reinforced safe room) or thick wall, about ₪600–900.
- Dedicated AC outlet: about ₪300–1,000 per Tadiran, if there’s no suitable outlet.
- Extending the drain hose: about ₪10–15 per meter per Tadiran.
- Crane: about ₪250 per hour, when the outdoor unit is in a hard-to-reach spot.
Before ordering, make sure the installer is licensed and that the installation warranty is given separately from the importer’s warranty. Per Tadiran, the importer’s warranty covers the AC, and the installation warranty comes directly from the installer. Full details are in our AC installation cost guide.
Heating in winter: which 1.25 HP heats better?
If the AC is the room’s main heat source, compare the heating figure in BTU and the SCOP. Here the differences between models are bigger than in cooling.
What we saw in the spec sheets:
- Electra Platinum INV 180: 13,100 BTU heating and a SCOP of 5.2. The best figures in the group.
- Tornado TOP J INV 16: 12,966 BTU heating and a SCOP of 4.1.
- Tadiran Air One INV 180: 12,180 BTU heating and a SCOP of 3.9.
- Electra Relax INV 170: 10,966 BTU heating, lower than cooling, but a SCOP of 5.07.
A high SCOP means less electricity per unit of heat. In Jerusalem, Safed or Beersheba, where winter nights are cold, you’ll notice it on the electricity bill.
On very cold days the outdoor unit may go into defrost. Per Tadiran, if in heating mode the compressor is running, the fans stop and a light flashes, the AC is defrosting, and you need to wait about 10 minutes. It’s not a fault. The full explanation of the lights and remote symbols is in our Tadiran AC remote symbols guide.
The bottom line
1.25 HP: About 12,000 BTU, room of about 14–18 m². 1.5 HP: About 13,500 BTU, room of about 17–21 m².

A 1.5 HP AC (about 13,500 BTU) suits a room of about 18–21 m² on a mid-level floor, and about 16–18 m² on a top floor or in a room with a large sunny window, based on about 650 BTU per m².
What room size is a 1.25 HP air conditioner good for?
A 1.25 HP AC (about 12,000 BTU) suits a room of about 15–18 m² on a mid-level floor, and about 14–16 m² on a top floor. Store models deliver between about 11,000 and about 12,400 BTU, so check the spec sheet.
How many BTU is 1.5 HP?
In the Israeli market, 1.5 HP is about 13,500 BTU per hour, and 1.25 HP about 12,000 BTU. It’s an approximate label. Per Tadiran, the HP-to-BTU conversion is a rough one, so always compare the BTU on the spec sheet.
How much does a Tadiran 1.25 HP AC cost?
At the store we checked, the Tadiran Air One INV 180 sold for about ₪1,650, and the Tadiran Galaxy INV-185 for about ₪1,565–1,990, depending on color. Prices don’t include installation.
Which is better, 1.25 HP or 1.5 HP?
It depends on the room size. Up to 18 m² on a mid-level floor, 1.25 HP is enough. Beyond that, or on a top floor, you need about 13,500 BTU or more. Exact 1.5 HP models are hard to find in stores, so you choose between a 1.25 HP with a wide upper range and a model of about 15,000 BTU.
Is a 1.25 HP AC enough for a living room?
Only for a small, closed living room of up to about 18 m². A 20–28 m² living room needs a 2 HP AC, and a living room open to the kitchen needs 2.5 HP or more.
How much does a 1.25 HP AC cost including installation?
About ₪2,050–3,450 in most cases. The AC costs about ₪1,250–2,050, and standard installation of an AC up to 1.5 HP costs about ₪800–1,400 per pro.co.il, including up to 3 meters of piping.
Does a 1.25 HP AC need a special breaker?
Per the spec sheets we checked, 1.25 HP models are single-phase and work with a 10-amp breaker, for example the Tadiran Air One INV 180 (10C) and Electra Platinum INV 180 (10A). An electrician should confirm the line is suitable.
Why doesn’t the number in the model name match the horsepower?
Because each importer uses its own system. The Electra A Inverter 140 is 1.25 HP, and the Electra Platinum INV 150 is 1 HP. The Tadiran Air One INV 180 is 1.25 HP. Always check the cooling output line in BTU.
